Having the right
uniforms for your staff offers a huge range of benefits that we discuss
frequently on this blog; your staff looks and acts more
professionally, teamwork is improved, clients think better of
you, we could go on and on. But did you know that having the right uniforms for
your staff may also be a legal obligation? Uniforms offer a host of safety
benefits, and depending on your industry and the job, they may be part of your
legal obligation to help keep your staff and facility safe. Personal Protective
Equipment, or PPE, is something that the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) has specific rules and guidelines to determine.
Along with OSHA,
your local government may have additional regulations to help keep citizens
safe. As you begin to investigate what rules you must follow, be sure to check
in with your city, county, and state as well. If you are found to be violating
these regulations, you may find yourself stuck with fines of $10,000 to over
$100,000. While this might seem harsh, it is important to remember that these
rules are in place for a reason. Additionally, if you are found to be violating
OSHA rules and an employee is injured, you’ll likely be paying out far more
than $100,000 with the additional expenses of workman’s compensation and legal
fees.
Different
industries have different regulations. Food workers, for instance, may only be
subject to a few regulations like keeping hair covered and having a clean and
sanitary work uniform to protect food safety and public health. In other
industries, like construction and medical, there are stricter regulations to
ensure the safety of the public as well as the safety of staff. Medical
professionals, for instance, need protection from
bloodborne pathogens and uniforms and equipment must be
provided to
ensure safety. Meanwhile, construction workers are at risk of
very different threats and are legally entitled to foot protection, head
protection, and hearing protection. Depending on the type of work being done
additional protective equipment may be required.
