If you’re
considering implementing a mandatory employee uniform, one decision you have to
make is who will buy the uniforms. Some assume this is a no-brainer: since the
employees will be wearing them, they should buy them. It also removes a cost
from the business budget. Before you shift this cost to your employees,
consider the many benefits of having your company pay for and provide employee
uniforms.
When you
provide employee uniforms, you are in control of everything about the uniform.
Depending on your industry, there are certain safety standards you will have to
meet, but there are often safety measures that are nice but not mandated, such
as padded knees in coveralls. These are things that your employees might not be
able to spend the money on for an individual uniform, but when you’re buying in
bulk they may not even increase your price by that much. You also remove the
possibility that your employees might buy a cheaper alternative that doesn’t
meet the safety standards of your business.
Uniforms,
regardless of who buys them, instill a sense of unity into any team. When you
provide your employees with their uniforms, you become responsible for and
increase that unity. This is because when employees buy their own uniforms they
may find ways to individualize them. This might be something small like an
employee choosing a
higher-end polo instead of the standard polo, but it could be enough to fracture the sense of unity. Having
the uniforms provided to the whole group may also increase the sense of
belonging, especially for new employees.
Another
benefit of supplying and maintaining the uniforms is that you can be assured
that they always look good, look uniform, and represent your brand well. You
won’t have to worry about employees wearing tattered,
dirty, bleach spotted, or otherwise unprofessional-looking uniforms.
Finally,
perhaps the biggest benefit of providing uniforms is increased employee happiness.
Happier employees are more productive employees. They are also more likely to
stay around, rather than looking for a new job somewhere that doesn’t cost them
more money to work there. Being able to say that while you do require uniforms
you also provide them so that there’s no out of pocket cost could make you a
more desirable employee to potential hires. All of this means that it will be
easier to attract and retain top talent so that your business thrives.
